Sweet Home Alameda
Dan Wood is one of a handful of Alameda backyard beekeepers. He has been maintaining up to four hives in his back yard in Alameda, near Park Street, since 2010. Almost every year, if the weather conditions are right, he's able to harvest around 100 pounds of honey from his hives, twice or three times a year. He also catches swarms that appear around town — this is a natural process where successful hives propagate to new locations. Using the excess beeswax he collects while harvesting honey, along with the beeswax he gets from other local beekeepers, he makes 100% pure beeswax candles. These long-lasting, delicious-smelling candles purify the air as they burn, not leaving toxic chemicals like mainstream petroleum-based candles.
