John Boychuk is a multidisciplinary artist, sculptor, designer, and builder based in Richmond, California, whose work explores the connection between materials, people, and shared spaces.

Originally from metro Detroit, John holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from California College of the Arts. His practice spans ceramics, metal fabrication, drawing, painting, sculpture, digital techniques, and VFX, with work ranging from intimate objects to large-scale public installations. He has taught at the university and community level, served as a Visiting Scholar in Ceramics in China, and facilitated public art projects throughout Richmond and beyond.

At the heart of John’s work is curiosity, about materials, how we interact with the spaces around us, and how art can create connection. His work invites an emotional response and leaves what he calls “breadcrumbs of recognition” for others to discover.

That same thoughtful, hands-on approach carries into his work as a maker. John is also the creator of Dad’s Everywhere Butter, a small-batch, hand-whipped skin butter he originally developed for his children when he couldn’t find products he felt good about putting on their skin. Made with food-grade whole-plant butters and oils, it reflects the same philosophy found throughout his creative practice: good materials, intentional choices, and no unnecessary shortcuts.

John currently serves as Vice President of the Richmond Art Center and is an active member of the Richmond Rotary. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public and private collections throughout the U.S., China, and Europe.

As part of the Alameda Gallery & Collective community, John will also host occasional artist talks and mixers, sharing his experience in public art and helping local artists connect, collaborate, and explore opportunities to bring their work into the public sector.

For John, making art isn’t only about creating objects. It’s about creating connections.
